Root Chakra: A Path to Grounding, Healing, and Whole-Body Reconnection
When you’re feeling scattered, unsafe, stuck, or disconnected from your body, there's a good chance your Root Chakra is asking for attention. At Soul Journey, we approach these moments as sacred invitations—not just to relax the body, but to return to the ground of your being.
Massage focused on the Root Chakra offers more than physical relief. It becomes a meditative reconnection point—a way to bridge ancient wisdom with modern understanding, and to remind your body and soul that you are safe, supported, and whole.

What Is the Root Chakra?
In the chakra system, the Root Chakra—also called Muladhara—is the first of seven primary energy centers. Located at the base of the spine, it’s associated with feelings of stability, safety, survival, and connection to the earth.
In Sanskrit, muladhara means “root support.” Just like a tree needs strong roots to grow tall, our energy needs to be rooted to support emotional and spiritual growth. When the Root Chakra is balanced, we feel calm, secure, and connected to our physical existence.
We have an article dedicated to the Root Chakra that you can find here.
Where Is It Located in the Body?
The Root Chakra governs the pelvic floor, tailbone, sacrum, hips, and upper thighs. Its physical domain includes:
The sacrococcygeal spine (tailbone area)
The gluteal muscles
The pelvic floor muscles (levator ani, coccygeus, and surrounding tissues)
The psoas and iliacus (deep hip flexors involved in posture and stress)
The hamstrings and adductors (inner thighs and back of legs)
These muscles and connective tissues store deep patterns of trauma, tension, and unconscious holding. Gentle, intuitive massage in this zone helps bring those patterns to light—offering not only relief but also release.
Organs and Systems Influenced by the Root Chakra
Physically, the Root Chakra corresponds with several key organs and systems:
Colon and rectum: Important for elimination and detoxification—often affected by stress and fear.
Bladder and urethra: Tied to fluid release and emotions.
Adrenal glands: Located just above the kidneys, they produce cortisol and adrenaline—your body’s fight-or-flight hormones.
Reproductive organs (partially shared with the Sacral Chakra): These carry ancestral patterns, identity, and grounding in human life.
Massage in this area supports nervous system regulation, immune balance, and improved digestive and elimination functions, all well-documented in Western medicine.
Marma Points and Energy Meridians
In Thai massage and Ayurvedic tradition, marma points are pressure points similar to acupuncture points. In the Root Chakra area, key marma points include:
Guda Marma: Located at the anus; linked to elimination and grounding.
Sthapani Marma: Located at the tailbone; regulates root energy and spinal flow.
Kati Marma: Near the sacrum; helps regulate low back energy and pelvic alignment.
These marma points intersect with energy meridians or sen lines (in Thai massage) and nadis (in yoga). Especially relevant here are:
Sen Sumana (central channel): Runs up the center of the body and is activated by breath and posture.
Sen Ittha and Pingkhala: Mirror the left and right channels and help balance polarity and energy distribution.
Though subtle, working with these points during bodywork often creates tangible experiences—tingling, warmth, emotional release, or a sudden sense of clarity.
How Root Chakra Massage Feels
Clients often describe Root Chakra massage as:
“A warm hum in my hips and legs”
“Like coming back into my body”
“I didn’t realize how much I was holding there until it let go”
During a session, we combine Swedish grounding techniques, deep tissue work, and energetic touch. This creates a slow, steady rhythm—allowing the nervous system to settle and the body to feel safe enough to open.
You may also be guided through breathwork, affirmations, or visualization to deepen your experience. Common affirmations include:
I am safe. I am supported. I belong here.
Why Western Medicine Is Paying Attention
Although chakras and energy lines aren't part of standard Western anatomy, the benefits of massage in the Root Chakra region are well-documented:
Reduced lower back and hip pain
Relief from sciatica and pelvic tension
Improved digestion and elimination
Better sleep and hormonal balance
Decreased anxiety and panic symptoms
Modern science is beginning to catch up with ancient practices. We now understand that fascia, the connective tissue network of the body, is a messenger of sensation and emotion. The fascia in the Root Chakra zone is dense and deeply influential—making it a prime candidate for therapeutic massage.
The Soul Journey Perspective
At Soul Journey, we believe your body is sacred. Every knot, tightness, or numb space is a message waiting to be heard—not something to fix, but something to explore with compassion.
Root Chakra massage isn't just about “releasing tension.” It’s about re-rooting your soul into this life, into this moment, and into your body. It’s a chance to remember: You are home, right here, in yourself.
