Why Beta Blockers Aren’t the Whole Answer—and How You Can Truly Reset
You may have read about introverts or socially anxious folks turning to adrenaline blockers, like propranolol, before public speaking, interviews, or social events. It’s not hard to understand why. When your heart races, your palms sweat, and your throat tightens, even the most well-prepared words can vanish in a wave of panic.
In that moment, a pill that promises to "take the edge off" feels like a miracle. And yes—beta blockers do help some people reduce physical symptoms of anxiety like tremors or rapid heartbeat. They’re often prescribed to musicians, public speakers, and performers for exactly that reason.
But here’s the critical truth:
These medications don’t actually heal the anxiety. They just quiet the alarm.
🔬 What the Research Really Says
Medical studies back this up. A recent meta-analysis of 10 clinical trials found that beta blockers do not significantly reduce emotional or psychological anxiety—only some of the outward symptoms. They may help in performance situations (temporary stress), but they don’t resolve chronic social anxiety or deep-rooted nervous system dysregulation.
And while they may provide a momentary sense of calm, they can also bring side effects—fatigue, dizziness, cold extremities, or even increased emotional flattening in some cases.
This isn’t a criticism of medication. Sometimes, short-term tools are helpful.
But at Soul Journey, we ask a different question:
What if the alarm isn't the problem? What if your nervous system isn’t broken—just overprotective?
Your Nervous System is a Fire Alarm—Not the Fire
Imagine you're in a building and the fire alarm goes off.
Would your first move be to smash the alarm bell with a hammer? Of course not.
We all know that the alarm is not the problem. The alarm is doing its job—telling us there's a possible fire somewhere. The smart thing to do is check for danger, address it, and wait for the smoke to clear. The alarm will turn off on its own once safety returns.
Your nervous system works exactly the same way.
When you feel anxious, overwhelmed, or unsafe—even when there's no obvious danger—your body is doing what it was designed to do: alerting you. That rush of adrenaline? That racing heart? They’re messages from a beautifully complex system that thinks it’s helping.
But sometimes that system is reacting to old wiring—childhood messages, trauma, or years of subtle stressors that conditioned your body to see connection, expression, or visibility as dangerous.
What Soul Journey Does Differently
At Soul Journey, we don’t try to silence your nervous system. We help you befriend it. Our somatic coaching program—available in person or on Zoom—is grounded in a core belief:
🌿 Healing doesn’t come from numbing the alarm. It comes from showing your body it is safe again.
We use simple, powerful tools that work with your body’s natural rhythms:
Nervous system mapping – helping you recognize your unique stress patterns
Somatic release techniques – to gently process and discharge stored tension
Breathwork and movement – to retrain your baseline state toward calm
Co-regulation practices – so you feel what it’s like to be supported in real-time
Guided inner journeying – reconnecting you with the voice beneath the fear
This isn’t therapy. And it’s not a pill.
It’s a practice of reclamation—a way to build confidence that lasts, by transforming how your body experiences safety.
Real Transformation: What Clients Are Saying
