In our high-speed digital lives, we often find ourselves floating—mentally, emotionally, and even physically. We forget that we are not only spirits having a human experience, but humans having an earthly one. We need the ground beneath us, not just as a metaphor, but as a vital connection to something ancient, healing, and deeply real.

That’s where grounding—also known as earthing—comes in. It’s a simple, beautiful concept: by physically reconnecting with the Earth’s natural electrical field, we balance and regulate our body’s own bioelectrical system. At Soul Journey, we use a surprisingly modern yet natural way to tap into this connection: copper grounding mats.

What Is a Copper Grounding Mat?

A grounding mat is typically a thin, flexible pad infused with conductive materials like copper or carbon. When plugged into the grounding port of a standard wall outlet (the round third prong), the mat becomes an extension of the Earth’s surface. You're not connecting to electricity—you’re connecting to the Earth’s subtle charge, channeled safely through the grounding wire in your home.

It may seem strange at first—plugging a mat into the wall to feel more natural—but this is simply a way to reestablish what our ancestors had all the time: skin-to-earth contact. Whether they were walking barefoot, sleeping on the ground, or swimming in natural water, they were plugged in 24/7. We, on the other hand, walk insulated by rubber soles and sleep surrounded by electronics. The grounding mat bridges that lost connection.

The Science Behind the Sensation

When you touch the Earth, your body absorbs free electrons—tiny negative charges that flow into your body. This can neutralize positively charged free radicals (a key source of inflammation and chronic disease). Peer-reviewed studies have linked grounding to:

  • Reduced inflammation

  • Lower cortisol (stress hormone) levels

  • Improved sleep

  • Faster wound healing

  • Reduced pain

  • Better blood flow and viscosity

On a nervous system level, grounding helps reset the autonomic balance between "fight-or-flight" and "rest-and-digest." In simpler terms, it tells your body, “You’re safe.

How It Feels—Physically, Energetically, and Beyond

Using a grounding mat isn’t flashy or dramatic—it’s subtle, yet undeniable. You might feel a tingling warmth at first, like static dissolving. Many describe a quieting of mental chatter, a softening of the gut, or an unexpected emotional exhale. Some even report dreams becoming more vivid or sleep feeling more restorative.

Viscerally, it can feel like your muscles are exhaling.

Physically, your pulse slows, your breath deepens.

Energetically, you may notice an inner stillness—like a buzzing phone finally being silenced.

Metaphysically, grounding aligns your body’s field with the Earth’s frequency, creating a resonance of peace and belonging that is deeply spiritual, even divine.

Where We Use Grounding Mats at Soul Journey

We believe in surrounding our guests with grounding energy. Where we use copper grounding mats:

  • At home in our bed, Our bottom sheet is grounded to aid deep sleep

  • Under our sofa, where our feet naturally rest while relaxing

  • Around our massage table, placed where I (Steve) stand to stay grounded during sessions

  • Directly under the client on the massage table, infusing the entire body with calming Earth energy

These mats create a low-frequency field of safety, harmony, and home. They're not the star of the show—but you’ll notice when they’re not there.

No Mat? No Problem. Try These Grounding Practices at Home

If you’re curious about grounding but don’t have a mat yet, try these natural, zero-cost methods:

  • Walk barefoot on grass, dirt, or sand for 10–30 minutes a day.

  • Wade into the ocean or a lake—water is an excellent conductor.

  • Touch a live tree or sit against its trunk.

  • Work with unglazed clay, stone, or natural wood.

  • Sit or lie directly on the ground during meditation or prayer.

  • Garden with your bare hands—soil contact can be deeply grounding.

Notice how you feel afterward: calmer, clearer, more here. That’s grounding at work.
